The women members of Mona Vale Golf Club hosted a fabulous 80th birthday luncheon in the Clubhouse on Monday, 14 October, honouring an extraordinary group of women. These remarkable ladies certainly know how to defy the years!
Adding to the festivities, Margaret Curtis delighted everyone with her ode to golf, bringing much rueful laughter to this memorable celebration.
I REMEMBER WELL … (before I took up golf!)
by Margaret Curtis
I remember well (before I took up golf!) …
When a slice was but a piece of cake,
Not a nasty, right-hand turn.
And a fair way was a distance walked –
Without a worry or concern.
Sand was safely found back then
On close and distant shores.
But now the sand in bunkers
Highlights my golfing flaws!
A pa was someone’s Dad back then,
And eagles flew on high.
But should I get an eagle now
I would probably just die!
Birdies once sung sweetly
While nesting in a tree,
But now, with club, in deepest bush,
A birdie’s not for me!
In the good old days before golf
Had reared its ugly head,
Teas were taken with chocolate cake,
Biscuits, buns and bread.
But now the tees that seem to loom
So large in my life,
Are short and pointy wooden things
From which to begin my strife!
The launch from tee can sometimes be
The greatest sight to see,
A ball that’s flying straight and far
Yet nowhere near a tree!
But then again those gremlins,
They never seem to rest
They’ll bring you down from the tee
When you’re trying to do your best
